It's been a long since the last PING update... Busy-busy time, can tell u...

YET, a new PING release is available, on the usual PING download page.

Not much has changed, but several components have been updated :

* 3.00.02 2009-03-30
  - Linux kernel upgraded to 2.6.29.
    Please, note that as a consequence, modules for NICs
    Atl2 and et131x cannot compile any more. However, the
    new kernel sources seem to integrate drivers for these
    hardware components. Feedback will be needed.
  - ntfs-3g upgraded from 1.5130 to 2009.2.1.
  - samba upgraded from 3.2.7 to 3.3.2.
  - clam AV definitions upgraded to 2009-03-30.
  - device-mapper upgraded from 1.02.26 to 1.02.28.
  - hdparm upgraded from 8.9 to 9.13.
  - lftp upgraded from 3.7.3 to 3.7.11.
  - LVM2 upgraded from 2.02.43 to 2.02.45.
  - sshfs-fuse upgraded from 2.0 to 2.2.

I'm not too condident about the two NICs which modules have been removed from the release, because they could not be compiled any more against the new kernel. But I know for sure some old PING users need these drivers to work... just let me know, and use 3.00.01 until it's fixed (if it has to be).

Two things that still aren't working, restoring from sda device to hda still has what seems to be typo error in which restore fails because it is looking for /dev/hda11 rather than /dev/hda1

Also, restoring to a larger disk, ntfs resize does not actually resize the partition.

I was looking at instructions somewhere else on how to get into initrd.gz, make changes, then recreate... any pointers as to where I could look to make those changes?

In the Howto's annex, you'll find how to change files within initrd.gz.

Yeah that much I got... I'm in rc.ping looking for something to change... Of course I suppose if it was easy to find, you would have done it by now...

I use 3.00.01 and et131x doesn't appear to be supported there either...
I didn't have to support this particular hardware until recently and it was the first NIC that PING didn't support for me
It's actually a gigabit version of the NIC embedded in an Earthwalk eBuddy...

Is there currently a way to load a NIC driver independently of any PING specific scripts (modprobe, insmod, etc?) or does PING only support kernel modules that are compiled into it?

If there is, can someone point me to the documentation for such?
If not, is there ANY way to get support for those NICs back?

Hi there,
Try to browse the PING download page for an older version ; it should really work.
It's a module, compiled separately from the kernel, but linked to the kernel.

The most difficult part is to get one's hands on these module sources. They are poorly maintained, sometimes included in newer kernels, sometimes not, and they are very unlikely to compile when you update your kernel. Worse: you can hardly guess if it's been included or not, as names are very confusing.

Can you tell me if there are any plans to incorporate the Intel 825XX NIC drivers into the kernel? The newer DELL Optiplex 760 machines have this NIC on them.

yes the newer Lenovo machines have intel pro1000 adapters which also don't seem to be included in the kernel.
